A Little Heads Up

We're getting very close to the end of Bridge's story (I'm really sad about this. I've loved writing for her). There are only two more, what I would call, regular chapters and then I plan to post the final chapter and an epilogue together. So that's really only three more to go. I'm trying my best to not rush posting the remainder; tying to give people a chance to catch up, but it's getting really hard. I was hoping to post one a week but there's no way I'm going to be able to drag this on for three weeks!!  So I'm going to do something I normally wouldn't do; the titles for the remaining chapters are listed in the Chapters tab. I'm going to put the dates up that I'll be posting them (including the heir vote). That way, you can catch up with the story and know the characters in the heir vote.

I'll also post the info here:

Chapter 22: The More the Merrier - Monday, February 3rd
Chapter 23: Paradise - Thursday, February 6th
Chapter 24: One More Day - Monday, February 10th
Epilogue: Monday, February 10th

Bridgette - Chapter Twenty One: A Wonderful Surprise

Warning: 18+ Rating since there is nudity in this chapter. There is also a lot of pictures since this is a longer chapter. Sorry, I just didn't want to break it up.

As the boat pulled up to the main island I caught the first glimpse of the house we were staying at during our honeymoon.  We walked onto the front patio and looked around and I was sure my mouth was hanging open.  It was a beautiful stone house that overlooked the ocean with a magnificent pool and comfy lounge area amongst beautiful landscaping. Even in with the limited light from the sun setting, it was easy to see how wonderful the house looked on the outside.

“I take it by the look on your face that you like it?” Carson asked while grinning.

“It’s absolutely stunning Carson! I’m actually glad you didn’t spoil the surprise.” I hated to admit it since I was always one who wanted to know everything that was happening.

“I keep trying to tell you that surprises can be good. Like this.” Before I knew what was happening he twirled me around to face him and kissed me. My shock soon wore off and we stood there for what felt like a lifetime kissing each other. I had to push him away slightly so I could catch my breath.

“I could get used to surprises like that.” I confessed and he chuckled. He took my hand and we walked towards the front door. He opened the door and turned to smile at me. “What’s that look for?” I asked him.

“Well, I have to carry you across the threshold.” He quickly picked me up and got a look on his face that I didn’t understand.

“What’s wrong?” I said while looking into his unreadable gray eyes.

“I’m just still waiting to wake up from this dream. I’m standing here, holding you which is a dream itself; but now it’s you, my wife.” I pulled his head down and kissed him. As we continued to kiss he walked inside the house and closed the door with one of his feet. He kept walking while kissing me and I started wondering where he was going. He quickly carried me through a dining room and then into a bedroom. Once in the bedroom he gently placed my feet on the ground. Before he could start kissing me again I stopped him.

“How did you know where to go? You just whisked me in here like you knew where you were going.”

“Oh, I may have come over here earlier today to make sure everything was taken care of. . .” He said while giving me wicked smile.

“You are full of surprises today. I bet you’re proud of yourself.” I teased him. I looked around the room and noticed the rose petals around the bed and the candles throughout the room. I looked back over at him and he reached up to stroke my cheek.

“Do you like the surprises though?” He asked me in a husky voice.

I felt my heart skip a beat. I was always taken aback at how with just a look or a tone of voice he could get my heart racing. It was like a part of me came to life when we were together. “Yes.” I said breathlessly.

He closed the distance between us and very seriously said, “Because from here on out, I plan to make my wife very happy.” I felt myself stop breathing at that moment when I saw the intensity in his eyes.

He put one hand on my back and gently pulled me in for a kiss. I started feeling the room spinning from the lack of oxygen but I didn’t care; all that I wanted at that moment was to make love to my husband. My husband, it did feel like a dream. I was there with my husband and it was him, Carson.

I was startled when he stopped kissing me. “What’s wrong Bridge?” He looked concerned as he searched my eyes, trying to figure out whatever he thought was wrong.

“What do you mean?” I was confused why he thought something was wrong.

“You’re, crying. . .” He said as he wiped away tears that had been falling down my cheeks.

I reached up and brushed my hand across his cheek. I hadn’t even realized that I had been crying. “There’s nothing wrong.” I told him while scanning every inch of his face. “I just love you.” I said and I started running my hand through his hair. I looked back into his eyes “Tell me we’re always going to be together; that we’ll always stay just like this.”

He put his hands on each side of my face and once again looked intensely into my eyes. “I promise.”

We started kissing again and made our way to the bed. I took off his coat, sweater and shirt and rubbed my hands on his chest. I thought everything about Carson was amazing but his chest was the one thing that always drove me over the edge; and even though I had seen it countless times over the years, I always tried to enjoy the sight of him shirtless whenever it occurred.  He had found this out one morning at the ASU house when he came into the kitchen and he caught me staring at his chest. I mumbled something about not being able to concentrate when he was around without his shirt on; ever since then he had made it a point to walk around without his shirt just to drive me crazy.

He slowly removed my blouse and skirt and then let my hair down. He took a moment to run his hands through my hair and we stood there looking into each other’s eyes almost as if we were both trying to imprint that moment into our memories.

He leaned down and started kissing my neck and then whispered in my ear. “We will always be together, Beautiful.”

I was putty in his hands by that point. He carried me over to the bed and we spent the rest of the night making love and cuddling with each other.

****Carson****

At some point we fell asleep and I was woken up by the sound of Bridge getting sick in the bathroom. I looked over at the clock and saw that it was 9:3o am. I hurried out of bed to go check on her. “Bridge, are you okay? I I heard a sound from the bathroom.

“I’m fine.” I heard her say before she got sick again. I walked into the bathroom to see my wife leaning over the toilet.

“How long have you been getting sick like this?”

“I told you I didn’t feel good yesterday.” She said as she sat down on the floor. She looked so tired and weak.

“No, I mean when did you start getting sick today? Did it just start now?” Before she could answer she was leaning over the toilet again. I walked over to her and held her hair back. I had a flashback to the night we went to the club and she got drunk; but this time was different since I had no idea what was causing this and she was obviously sick.

She stopped again and she looked at me with tears in her eyes. “I’m so sorry Carson! I’m just completely ruining our honeymoon.” She started sobbing and I hugged her.

“Shh. You aren’t ruining anything. You can’t help that you‘re sick. So when did this start?”

She pulled away and looked at me. “Not long before you came in here.” I was somewhat relieved that it hadn’t been for very long. I started thinking about how she had just started recently getting sick. Before she had only been feeling tired and run down from the sinus infection she had. She wasn’t showing any symptoms of the sinus infection now but was still tired and was now getting sick. I watched as she leaned over the toilet again and I felt so helpless watching her.

“Hey Bridge,” I started after she stopped getting sick again, “Do you have any symptoms of the sinus infection you had before.”

“Except for feeling tired, no. I’m starting to wonder if I have a virus now or something. It’s obviously not food poisoning.”

It was then that it hit me right between the eyes; the tiredness, getting sick. . .“You don’t think you’re pregnant, do you?” All the symptoms made sense to me but I wasn’t sure how it was possible.

“No! You know I’m on the pill and it’s 99 percent effective unless. . . Oh God!” She ran into the bedroom where the luggage was. “I can’t believe I forgot this. . .Of all the stupid things. . .” She kept mumbling things to herself as she searched through the bags until she found her birth control pills. She moved her lips as she read through the warnings and instructions and suddenly her eyes got wide and she slowly looked up at me.

“Oh my God, Carson. I completely forgot!”

“Forgot what; to take a pill?”

“No! One of the warnings is that the effectiveness of the birth control can be affected by antibiotics. I took them for the sinus infection. . .” We stood there staring at each other for a moment as the last couple sentences she spoke settled in. After a long silence I walked up to her.

“So there is a chance that you’re pregnant.”

She looked away for a moment and then quickly looked back at me. “Yes.” I walked over to one of the suitcases and grabbed a pair of pants and a shirt.

“What are you doing?” She asked almost in a panic.

“I’m going to go to a store and get a pregnancy test and we’re going to find out for sure if you are.” She stood there blinking her eyes at me like she was still trying to come to grips with what might be happening. “Will you be okay while I’m gone? I’ll hurry back, the store’s not far from here.” She nodded and I kissed her before leaving.

The store was just down the street so I ran there. It felt great to stretch my legs and to have a moment to think about what might be happening. I wasn’t sure how Bridge felt about the possibility of us having a child right now but I was thrilled. It didn’t matter to me when we started a family. We had talked about wanting a larger family which meant we couldn’t wait too many years.  I had recently started joking with her that I wanted eight children and we would barter back and forth until we would agree on four with the possibility of more.

I walked into the store and went to the aisle marked for feminine needs.  I had ventured into that aisle several times buying Bridge things and every time I felt weird doing it. I didn’t mind doing it but I always felt like people were looking at me weird because I was a guy in the feminine needs aisle.  I found where the pregnancy tests were and was shocked by the number of choices there were. They all claimed to be the most reliable and the one that could detect the pregnancy sooner than the others. I finally decided on one that had three for the price of two, paid at the cash register and then ran back to the house.

I watched as Carson left and I almost immediately had to run to the bathroom. As I sat on the bathroom floor waiting for him to return I thought about how stupid I had been. I knew that antibiotics could have an effect on birth control pills but with all the craziness of the last month I had forgotten. I wasn’t sure how Carson was going to react if I was pregnant and I wasn’t too sure how I felt about it. I definitely wanted children but I wasn’t so sure this was the greatest time. With Carson getting ready to start an internship and us moving into a new home, it was going to be chaotic if I was pregnant; but that seemed to be the story of our lives right now.

I heard the front door open and he rushed into the bathroom. “Have you gotten sick anymore since I left?”

I nodded. “Only once; I’m actually feeling a little better now.” I stood up and he handed me a bag.

“There are like a million different ones to choose from and I had no idea what to get.” He said really fast. This was one of the few times I had seen him anxious. I didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing. I stood there looking at him for a second waiting for him to leave. He looked at me and got a confused look. “Aren’t you going to take the test?”

“Well, yeah, I really didn’t want to pee on a stick in front of you though.” It just seemed weird for him to watch me do it.

“Oh! Well. . .I guess I’ll wait outside; but the second your done let me know. I think we should find out together.”

“Okay.” He kept standing there and I couldn’t help but chuckle at him. “Carson, honey, are you going to stand there or leave?”

“Oh! Sorry! I’m leaving.” He quickly turned and walked out of the bathroom. I smiled as he walked out the door; it was hard to tell who was more anxious, me or him. I pulled the box out and opened it up to take out one of the pregnancy tests. I read the directions carefully to make sure I knew exactly what to do. It wasn’t rocket science but the instructions kept stressing to do each step correctly to insure an accurate test result.  I followed each step and then placed the test on the counter. I through the doorway and saw Carson pacing.

He jumped when he saw me. “Is it done? What does it say?”

“You have to wait five minutes before reading the result. Are you okay? You seem really anxious.” I had never seen Carson like this. He was usually the calm one and right now it seemed like I was actually the calm one.

“I’m fine. How long has it been now?”

“It’s been two minutes, Carson.”

“Oh. . .” He walked over to me and we stood outside the bathroom door waiting for five minutes to pass; five minutes that felt like one hundred. I looked at him and he reached out to grab my hand and smiled at me. That’s when I knew that no matter what the test said, everything was going to be alright.

Once I was sure five minutes had passed, I squeezed his hand and nodded. We walked into the bathroom together and he picked up the test without looking at it.

“Are you ready?” He asked me. I nodded and as we stood next to each other he held the pregnancy test up so we could both see it.

I stared at it and then looked at Carson; then back again. There was no denying it, it said pregnant.

“That does say pregnant, right? I’m not seeing things. . .” Carson asked.

“No, it most definitely says that it’s positive. . .” Before I could say anything else Carson was picking me up and hugging me.

“Oh my gosh, Bridge! You’re pregnant!!!” He excitedly screamed and started twirling me around. He suddenly stopped and put me down. “You’re pregnant. . .” He said, this time in a hushed voice and put his hand on my belly. He looked up at me and smiled. “Are you okay?” He asked me.

I wasn’t sure, it was all happening so fast I couldn’t keep up with what was going on. “I. . .this is all happening so fast Carson. We just got married and I’m pregnant?”

“Are you upset?” He looked really concerned.

“God no! I mean I’m shocked but I’m not upset.” He led me over to one of the couches and we sat down. “We’ve talked about this Carson; we both want children. I just didn’t think it would be this soon. I was just starting to think that things might start slowing down now that we’re moving back to Appaloosa and you’ve graduated. It’s a good thing we expanded the house!” I sat there for a minute thinking about what was happening. “I take it by your response that you’re okay with it?” I smiled at him.

He smiled and kissed me. “Are you kidding? I’m thrilled! You are right though, it’s a lot to adjust to in a short period of time. You’re sure you’re okay; I know you’re not the fondest of things changing and this is a pretty big change.”

“Yeah but this is a good kind of change. It’s going to be challenging, crazy, tiring, and many other things but the thought of seeing a little Carson running around makes me smile.”

“What about a little Bridge? That would be the most adorable thing ever.” He smiled while thinking about it.

“You wouldn’t think so if you talked to Mom and Dad. They could tell you some stories about me growing up.”

“I thought I already knew everything about you!” He pretended to be upset.

“Well, I guess this is the honeymoon of surprises then, big and small.”

“When do you think we should tell our parents. . .Oh crap! Do you think your dad’s going to kill me for getting you pregnant before we got married.”

“Really, Carson, we’re married now and he won’t care, he’ll just be thrilled to be a grandfather again.” He let out a sigh of relief.

“Maybe we should wait until I go to the doctor; just to be safe.”

“That sounds like a good idea. In the meantime, we still have a whole week to enjoy staying here.”

The rest of our honeymoon we mostly stayed at the house enjoying the pool, ocean, and the house. We sometimes ventured out into town but with the all day morning sickness I was having it was just safer to stay around the house most of the time. Carson even taught me to snorkel in the pool. I felt bad though that we couldn’t do as much as we had originally planned but Carson kept telling me that all he wanted to do was relax and spend time with his wife.

The week flew by quicker than either of us wanted. We loved having those days alone in our own little bubble. We knew once we got back to Appaloosa we would be met with moving challenges, Carson’s internship and then the changes that having a child would include.  As we drove up to Mom and Dad’s house Carson reached over and squeezed my hand. I was really apprehensive now about staying at the house since we didn’t want to tell anyone about the baby till after I went to the doctor. I had already made an appointment for two days after we returned to Appaloosa but with the morning sickness I was still having, I knew Mom and Dad would be concerned and would pester me about still being sick.

We pulled into the driveway and as usual, Mom and Dad rushed out to greet us. “You both look tanned and rested.” Mom said as she hugged us. I was glad I looked rested to her.  “Come on in! I’m sure you’ll want to rest after your flight.”

We followed Mom and Dad inside and I saw Kate and Charlie in the family room with two little babies. “Did you go and have babies  while we were on our honeymoon? I thought you were only having one.” It seemed like the surprises just kept coming.

“Like we had any say in it! We were just as shocked when two came out!”  Charlie joked.  “Carson and Bridge, meet Amelia Katherine and Anne Elizabeth.” Carson and I looked at our nieces and I couldn’t help but think of the baby that was growing inside of me. I caught myself almost touching my belly but knew that that would be a dead giveaway if anyone was paying attention. It was going to be a long two days.

“They’re absolutely adorable!” I gushed. Kate and Charlie soon took Amelia and Anne upstairs and Carson and I were left alone.

“That’s going to be us in about eight months.” Carson whispered in my ear. I turned and smiled at him. It still didn’t seem real to me that we were going to be parents. I was still getting used to being called Mrs. Davila; soon people would be referring to me as a mother.

The next two days crawled by. Carson and I went to look at the house and we were told that we could move in within the next week. Another surprise since we had originally planned to stay two weeks with Mom and Dad. We looked around the outside and then went upstairs to look at the nursery. When we had originally drawn up the plans for the house, we had went ahead and created a master/nursery suite where the two were joined by a door.  We talked about where we wanted to place furniture and decorating the room in a neutral color so we wouldn’t have to change it in the future.

Finally the day of my doctor’s appointment  arrived. Carson and I told Mom and Dad we were going to see the house again so they wouldn’t get suspicious. While we sat in the waiting room, I couldn’t help but feel anxious.

****Carson****

“What if something’s wrong? What if I’m not really pregnant and the test was wrong?” Bridge worried.

I grabbed her hand. “Bridge, it will be okay. I went online soon after you took the test and found out it’s way more likely to get a false negative than a false positive.”

She sighed a little and seemed to calm down. I couldn’t blame her; I was a basket case myself but I didn’t want to let Bridge know it. She was stressing enough for both of us. We both waited very impatiently for her name to be called. After about thirty minutes of waiting a nurse finally came out and called her name. We walked through the doors and she motioned for me to have a seat while they ran a couple tests on Bridge. It didn’t look like much fun. Blood work, blood pressure, and of course, another urine test.

Once they were done the nurse escorted us to a room and told us that the doctor would be in soon.  We sat in the room for what felt like an eternity before a very cheerful woman came into the room.

“Bridgette! So good to see you again!” She hugged Bridge and then looked at me. “I see you’ve gotten married since the last time I saw you. Congratulations!” She said and stuck out her hand for me to shake. “I’m Trina Reeves. You must be. . .Carson, right?”

“That’s right.”

“The last time Bridge was in here she was talking about you.” She smiled at me and then turned her attention to a chart she had in her hand. “I see here that you had a positive home pregnancy test.” She looked up and we both nodded. She looked back down at the papers and then smiled at both of us. “You are indeed pregnant. Blood pressure looks good, hormone levels look wonderful. . .Any morning sickness?”

“Yes! Pretty much all day and I swear I’ve actually lost weight in the last week.” Bridge admitted.

“Hmmm. . .well, how about we get you ready for an ultrasound and we’ll take a peek at what we got. Then we’ll talk more about the morning sickness. I’ll step out while you get ready.”

A couple minutes later the doctor came back in with a nurse and I watched as they turned most of the lights off and then put some jelly on Bridge’s belly, followed by placing a weird looking instrument on the jelly. I was absolutely amazed at what happened next. On a small tv screen a black and white grainy image appeared and swooshing noises started.  “Let’s see. . .If I was a baby I’d go somewhere around here.” The doctor said and moved the instrument to a spot on Bridge’s belly. As if by magic, a little image appeared. It didn’t look like much to me but I could tell by the doctor’s response that she had found what she was looking for. She pushed a button and it froze the image on the screen. “That my friends is your baby. You can see right here the heart and if we turn the speakers up we should be able to hear the heartbeat.” She turned it up and I was blown away with what I was seeing and hearing.

I reached over and grabbed Bridge’s hand and she looked over at me and smiled. I was almost overcome with joy. I was about to start crying when the doctor made an exclamation. “Well that’s odd. . .” I almost started panicking. I started thinking about what could have been odd. My mind raced and I looked at Bridge. She too had a concerned look on her face.

The doctor moved the device around again and concentrated really hard on the screen. She did that for about a minute before she got a huge grin on her face and said “I thought so. Bridgette, you’re a twin aren’t you?” Bridge nodded. The doctor turned the screen back towards us and pushed another button to freeze the image. “This is the baby I just showed you. . .” She then pointed to something else. “. . .and this is the odd thing I was hearing. There are two heartbeats. You’re having twins!”

I about fell out of my chair; we both knew it was a possibility that we could have twins but it was still shocking to hear. I looked at the doctor. “Are you sure?”

She smiled at me. “Yes. I was wondering with the morning sickness, hormone levels and the fact that you’re a twin if you were pregnant with more than one and it seems that’s the case. We can give you some medication for the morning sickness. You really need to stay hydrated and eat. Your energy level is probably going to be low for the next couple of months, especially since you’re carrying two babies. Besides that, everything looks great! I’d like to see you back here in three weeks. Do you have any questions?”

Bridge and I just stared at her, both of us too shocked to say anything. She smiled again. “I’m sure eventually when the shock wears off, you’ll think of some questions. Don’t hesitate to call. Here’s a copy of the ultrasound pictures we took. I’ll see you in three weeks! Congratulations!” She and the nurse walked out and Bridge and I were left alone.

“Carson, she did just say we’re having twins, right?”

I looked at her and she looked as shocked as I’m sure I did. “Yes. Can there be any more surprises after this?”

“Don’t say that! You’ll jinx us!” She half joked. After making her next appointment we walked out of the doctor’s and we stood outside unsure of what to do next.

“I don’t want to tell any of our parents over the phone. Do you think I could call my Mom and Dad and have them meet us at your parents’?” I asked her.

“I think that’s probably the best. I’ll call Mom and tell her that your parents are coming over.” We each called our parents and then drove back to her parents’ house. When we arrived my parents were also pulling in.

“What’s going on Carson? Is everything okay?” My mom asked in a panic.

“Everything’s fine Mom, let’s all get inside.” They followed Bridge and I inside and we called a family meeting in the living room. Once everyone was there I looked at Bridge and we held each other’s hand. I took a big breath in as I looked around the room and met the eyes of everyone sitting there. I let out the breath and started talking.

“I think everyone here knows that Bridge wasn’t feeling well leading up to the wedding and then seemed to get a stomach bug right before the wedding.” Everyone nodded. “Well, what we hadn’t told anyone was that her sickness got worse while we were on our honeymoon.” Everyone started to look very concerned.

“What we also hadn’t told you was that Bridge took a pregnancy test while we were at Paradise Island.” Immediately the concerned expressions started to turn to almost hopeful ones. “The test was positive.” Everyone jumped up and started celebrating. “Wait! There’s more.” They looked confused and sat back down. Bridge and I really didn’t go look at the house today, we went to the doctor to confirm that she really is pregnant; which the doctor did confirm. But she also confirmed something else.” Everyone sat there looking at me; pleading with me to continue. I looked over at Bridge and we smiled at each other. “We’re having twins.”

Everyone jumped back up. “Oh this is wonderful!” Amanda exclaimed “How far along are you Bridge?”

“The doctor said that I’m around 10 weeks, which is actually further along than Carson and I originally thought.”

Everyone started coming up to us and giving us congratulations. I noticed that Chuck slowly made his way over and looked at both of us with a straight face. This was the moment I had somewhat dreaded.  As he continued to look at us his expression changed to a happy one. “Twins. . .two more grandchildren. What a wonderful surprise.” He hugged Bridge and then me and went over to Amanda and hugged her.

“I told you; he’s much more interested in the fact that he’s going to be a grandfather again.”

I was glad she had been right, and so was Chuck; twins was a wonderful surprise.
