Story Writing Questions:

Was his story planned out from beginning:  Yes, and it was pretty much everything from how he met Bridge to him dying. The only thing that changed was he was supposed to die from cancer but as their story kept getting longer, I felt it just needed to happen fast. So it changed to him dying from a car crash. Carson’s purpose was to help Bridge grow as a character. Because of him, she’s better able to handle change, learns that surprises can be a good thing, becomes more confident in herself, and he helps her become the woman that she ends up being.  The one thing that surprised me was how he slowly crept into being as major a character as Bridge. When I first envisioned his role it wasn’t nearly as big as it ended up being.

What song/songs helped in writing this generation: You’re the Inspiration – Chicago, Close Your Eyes – Michael Buble, Now and Forever – Richard Marx, One More Day – Diamond Rio, My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion

Was there another ending to this generations story: The only thing that was different was how he died.

Very subtle hints about Carson’s ending: Before I give them, I want to explain a little. These were not meant to make readers know he was going to die. It was more of to get an idea to maybe form because of the way a sentence was said, thought, or even how a chapter was written.  I never wanted people to know the ending so that way you could experience some of Bridge’s and the kids’ emotions.

- Chapter 10 part two (Nothing Can Stay The Same Forever)

Kate – “Nothing can stay the same forever, things are constantly changing. You can either adapt the best way you can to the changes or constantly be overwhelmed by them.”  - She was at that moment talking about the changes that were happening because of them getting older but it applies to everything. One of the biggest themes for Bridge was her fear and inability to deal with change. Because of Carson, she learned how to deal with it which led her to be able to “deal with” his death.

- Chapter 20 part two (The Love of My Life)

Carson – “As much as I wanted the ceremony to be over so we could finally be married, I also wanted to take in every moment so that when my time on earth was over, I could still recall every second of this moment in time.”  - As the story got closer to ending I purposely chose wording that might raise some suspicion. Instead of saying that he always wanted to remember this moment I purposely changed it to ‘when my time on earth is over, I could still recall. . .’

- Chapter 21 (A Wonderful Surprise)

Bridge – “Tell me we’re always going to be together, that we’ll always stay like this.”

Carson – “I promise. . .We will always be together, Beautiful.”

- Chapter 22 (The More the Merrier)

Carson (talking about the kids) – “I know that if we just love them (the kids) and are here for them when they need us that they will never feel resentful or cheated.”

- Chapter 23 (Paradise)

Bridge – “What would we do without you?”

- The whole second part of the chapter is either Carson’s point of view or one of the kids. That only occurs one other time and it was the special chapter.

- All of the interactions with the kids are with mainly with Carson. He’s the one giving each of them advice and you see how crucial he was to the kids’ lives.

- The reoccurring theme of being in a dream and not wanting to wake up:

Chapter 11 (Everything Has Changed) part two

Carson – “After four and a half years, Bridge and I were actually on the same page about our feelings for each other. I wanted someone to pinch me to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.”

Carson – “I leaned down and kissed her. I knew I needed to go but I just wanted to stay with her. It was almost like I was scared that this would all stop being true if I walked away.”

Chapter 21 (A Wonderful Surprise)

Carson – “I’m still waiting to wake up from this dream.”

Chapter 23 part two (Paradise)

Bridge - “We do make a pretty good team don’t we?”

Carson - I smiled back at her. “We most certainly do, Beautiful. I wouldn’t be half the man I am if it wasn’t for you. The only reason I’m where I am today is because of your love and support.” She reached up and stroked my cheek. I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath.

Bridge - “What’s that for?” She asked.

Carson - I opened my eyes and smiled. “I’m still waiting for someone to pinch me and wake me up from this dream.”

What’s one thing about this character that that has not yet been revealed that you would like readers to know:  I tried to lay it all on the line with Carson. He was very much an open book.  I guess it would be what his actual traits were which were: Athletic, Family Oriented, Great Kisser, Hopeless Romantic,  Nurturing and I tried to incorporate all of them into his story.

What’s one thing you would change if you could rewrite his story: Nothing.

What’s your favorite thing about him: I can’t pick one. I love the way he loved Bridge, how funny he was, what a great dad he was, how he had this uncanny ability to get everyone to like him, I could go on and on. . .

What’s your favorite thing about this generation: Hands down, their love story.

  1. Those hints were cool to see. I don't think that I had any idea that he was going to have an early death until the chapter where he actually died. In your authors note when you said get a tissue, and I saw the first picture of Bridge holding her cell phone, I then got the feeling that something had happened to Carson. In the Paradise Island chapter, I enjoyed that Carson was having little talks with his kids. It was sweet. I did like their love story, it was again, sweet, :D

    1. Small, tiny, very subtle hints. I wanted his last chapter to be mostly from his point of view. I felt it needed to be that way since that was going to be his last opportunity to be heard. I'm glad you liked the moments he had with the kids! I really liked writing those. =D

I get a mushy feeling whenever I think of their story. They were so fun to watch in the game. They were always near each other and flirting.

Thanks for reading his character study and commenting, LateKnight! : )

    1. Sigh, I miss him too. I was taking pictures for his download and I realized how much I missed him. I purposely finished this character study a while ago so I wouldn't have to do it after the chap'ter came out.

I knew, if I was reading the story, that I would want to know what the hints were so I included them. :)

I love reading character studies too. I think it helps sometimes in explaining why a character acted or spoke in a certain way.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting, Amandralynn!
